Bibiani North

Overview

The project covers an area of 696km2 comprising 7 Prospecting Licences stretching over the 110km eastern margin of the Sefwi Volcanic belt from the northern extent of the Chirano licences to the edge of the Palaeozoic cover.

Property Description and Location

The project is located approximately 400km north of the capital Accra in the Western and Ashanti regions of Ghana. It comprises an irregular series of licences trending north east from the area of the Bibiani Mine and town, paralleling the range of hills that characterize the belt margin as far as the village of Abofour in the north.

Physiography and Accessibility

The property can be accessed by well maintained highway from Accra, through Kumasi and Bibiani or Bechem. Access throughout the project area is provided by a network of gravel tracks but can be problematic in the wet season.

The climate is hot and humid typical of lower elevation equatorial regions. Annual rainfall is approximately 200cm, concentrated mainly between April and July.

Topography is gently undulating to steeply hilly with relief commonly in the range of 30m to 100m. Vegetation is commonly secondary forest growth and subsistence and cash crops.

Geological Setting

The project area is located on the eastern margin of the Sefwi belt, north of the +5Moz Bibiani deposit (Anglogold Ashanti). The principal targets are the main belt margin shear(s) and splays off those structures. Secondary targets are parallel structures within the belt, especially where they coincide with granite/volcanic contacts and contacts between major units within the volcanic-volcaniclastic sequence.

Deposit Types

The Bibiani Mine is the most significant deposit in the area. Mineralisation is shear hosted in Birimian phyllitic sediments intruded by several phases of felsic dykes. Gold is associated with extensive quartz veining and is associated with silicification and arsenopyrite. The deposit is located just east of the main volcanic/sediment contact that forms the margin between the Sefwi Volcanic belt and the Kumasi sedimentary basin.

Exploration History

Prior to Red Back's involvement little systematic exploration had been carried out in much of the project area.

2004/2005 Exploration Programs

Due to the lack of previous work in the project area, early work by Red Back consisted of stream sediment sampling with follow up soil geochemistry in several areas. Resultant anomalies were further investigated by trenching and deep hand auger sampling. One prospect has been drilled without returning significant results.

2006/2007 Exploration Program

Exploration in 2006 and to date in 2007 has continued with reconnaissance work through systematic 800m x 50m spaced soil sampling. One anomaly has been covered by first pass trenching.
