Akyem

Overview

The Akyem project comprises a group of licences in the northern part of the Ashanti belt. One of these (Tawia) straddles the belt margin, along strike (14km) from Newmont's Akyem project. The others cover ground within the belt in an area where a number of major structures veer to the north and complex, major faulting juxtaposes Birimian volcanics and Tarkwaian sediments.

Property Description and Location

The project comprises 6 Prospecting Licences totaling 346km2. The project area is located in the Nkawkaw district in the Eastern Region of Ghana and straddles the main Accra --Kumasi highway.

Physiography and Accessibility

Access to the project area is good with numerous gravel roads connecting small villages with the district centre of Nkawkaw.

The climate is hot and humid typical of lower elevation equatorial regions. Annual rainfall is 200cm, concentrated mainly between April and July.

The project area comprises low lying hills and alluvial plains with occasional steep ridges rising up to 150m. Land use is dominated by subsistence agriculture with cocoa and cola-nut being the major cash crops.

Geological Setting

The licences lie within the Northern part of the Ashanti Belt. The project area includes splay faults branching off the main shear at the Akyem deposit and a series of north north east trending structures veering away from the main north easterly trend and often forming the contacts between Birimian Volcanics, Tarkwaian and belt-type granites.

Principle targets are major north east trending shears particularly where these structures juxtapose Birimian Volcanics and Tarkwaian sediments.

Deposit Types

Known mineralisation in the immediate area of the project is restricted to the Besease deposit, 7km north-west of the project area. The Besease style of mineralization is characterised by a multiplicity of 10-23m wide and smaller 1 -2 metre wide auriferous shears, faults and quartz veins occurring within a more regionally extensive 75-100m wide north east trending carbonaceous shear zone.

Exploration History

Prior to Red Back's involvement minimal exploration was carried out in this project area.

2004/2005 Exploration Programs

During this period Red Back has completed a significant amount of stream sediment and soil sampling over this project. This sampling defined 4 distinct, north east striking anomalous trends of up to 2.5km length as defined by the 20ppb contour.

2006 Exploration Program

In the first quarter 2006, 12,102m of RAB drilling in 436 holes were completed over three gold in soil trends which highlighted bedrock mineralisation in several areas.

A fourth gold in soil anomaly at Big Hill was the focus of exploration in the second half of 2006 and early 2007. Extensive trenching, rock chip sampling and geological mapping were carried out on two mineralised zones. Results are being evaluated with a view to a first pass drill programme.
