Ahafo NorthOverview This project comprising the Tanoso Prospecting licence of 86km2 covers the projected northeast extension of the structures hosting Newmont's Ahafo project (+12Moz) on the northern margin of the Sefwi volcanic belt. Property Description and Location The project comprises the Tanoso Prospecting licence of 86km2 located in the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana, 25km south west of the regional centre of Sunyani. Physiography and Accessibility Access to the project area is good with high quality gravel tracks connecting numerous small villages with the main, sealed Kumasi-Sunyani highway. The climate is hot and humid typical of lower elevation equatorial regions. Annual rainfall is approximately 200cm, concentrated mainly between April and July. The project comprises gently rolling topography with occasional steep sided valleys. Dominant land use is subsistence agriculture with cocoa and oil palms providing the main cash crops. Geological Setting The project straddles the projected northern margin of the Sefwi belt. The north eastern part of the licence is underlain by Palaeozoic sediments of the Volta basin. Much of the remainder of the licence area is underlain by micaceous cape coast or basin type granites with feldspar porphyry granite mapped in the south of the area. Airborne magnetics shows a strong structural grain extending north east from the northern end of the Ahafo trend (+12Moz). Deposit Types The deposits comprising the northern part of the Ahafo trend are controlled by regional scale, reactivated thrusts concentrated on lithologic contacts at the margin of the Sefwi Belt, specifically sediment- granite and granite-granite contacts. Exploration History Prior to Red Back's involvement, exploration was restricted to sporadic stream sediment sampling. 2005 Exploration Program In 2005 the licence was covered by systematic, reconnaissance stream geochemistry. As a result of weak anomalism and it's structural setting soil sampling was completed based on a 400m x 50m grid over the south west part of the licences. 2006 Exploration Program Follow up soil sampling proved disappointing but the extent and depth of the Proterozoic Voltain sediment cover is being evaluated. |
